Orchestration

What is Orchestration?

Orchestration is general purpose automation of IT processes that are event- or user-driven. It includes processes that were previously performed manually and typically involve interaction with multiple software or hardware systems in order to automate complex interactions. There are many IT operations orchestration tools available in the marketplace and most have similar architectures (see below). There are significant differences between products, however, and these factors include ease of use performance, scalability, community and pre-built content and connectors. Zefflin focuses exclusively on the automation portion of IT operations. We have very deep expertise in many operations orchestration tools.

Why ServiceNow Orchestration?
ServiceNow Orchestration is a natural extension to your existing investment in ServiceNow.  It runs on the same familiar ServiceNow platform that you and your team know. This enables you to roll out automation while minimizing investment and impact to your organization.

The ServiceNow Orchestration tool uses the existing workflow engine and extends that with the MID server, which remotely executes any scripts or code that is part of an orchestration workflow.  It is a light weight footprint that can run securely in many environments.  The MID server also has a dual purpose, which again maximizes your investment.  It is also part of the ServiceNow ServiceWatch product, which provides auto-discovery capabilities for service mapping and CMDB.  By installing a MID server, a customer can execute remote orchestration workflows and perform automated service mapping in their CMDB with the same service.

Use Cases
There are many IT and support processes that can be automated with orchestration.  It is important to recognize those processes for which ROI can be had versus those that can't.  Below are just a few examples of optimal targets for automation through orchestration.

IT Operations
  • Intelligent integration between
  • ITSM and monitoring systems
  • Employee onboarding
  • Intelligent incident remediation
  • Application workflow integration to ERP, HR, LDAP and others
Managed Service Providers
  • Customer Onboarding
  • Account Credential Validation
  • Blackout processing of monitored servers
  • Auto remediation of known incidents
